REVIEW
THE CHALK GARDEN
This compelling film was adapted by
John Michael Hayes from a successful
stage play by Edith Bagnold. It retains
the original emotional power while
effectively removing the theatricality.
Deborah Kerr plays a mysterious woman
who is employed as a governess for a
wilful, wayward and impudent young girl
played by Hayley Mills.
Ms Mills lives with her imperious
grandmother (Edith Evans) and has been
convinced by her that her mother hates
her and does not want her around.

THE CHALK GARDEN
Hayley Mills plays the confused,
mixed-up kid superbly: not only is she
rude and arrogant, but also hurt and
confused inside.
According to her, the new governess is
'wonderfully odd', and this is the way
Deborah Kerr plays the part of a wordly
wise woman who obviously has something
hidden in her past.
John Mills also stars as a manservant
who fits into this strange household by
being insolent but who is also a sound
philosopher to boot!

THE CHALK GARDEN
Dame Edith Evan turns out a magnificent
performance as the typical aristocrat:
arrogant, self-confident; a woman who
all her life has had the assurance of
beauty, riches and wealth.
These sound, confident performances
help to highlight the basic feelings
and emotions that the characters
experience.
Through Hayley Mills we see how
children can hate those they really
love once they feel they have been
betrayed.

THE CHALK GARDEN
The eternal struggle between parents
and children, and more specifically
mothers and daughters is portrayed by
the interaction between Edith Evans and
her daughter.
Parents always feel betrayed when their
children don't do what they want them
to, even though, as the parentu feel,
they have been given everything.
Evans can't stand the thought that
her daughter has re-married so she
warps Hayley's view of her mother so
that she feels deserted by her.

REVIEW
THE CHALK GARDEN
But the bond between mothers and
daughters is so deep and strong that
however much they think they hate each
other they only really want to be shown
love.
Director Ronald Neame concentrates on
getting the best performances from his
cast. He is helped by Arthur Ibbetson's
lucid colour photography and Carmen
Dillon's excellent art direction.
Said the New York Times "Prudent and
skilful hands make it a bright, sweet
and aromatic picture". It's on Thursday
at 2.35pm.
