MY BROTHER'S KEEPER
This Thursday at 12.10am sees the last
of Channel 4 's six part series looking
at the practical work carried out by
churches in helping those who have
fallen through the social safety net.
Over the past five weeks the series has
looked at Campion House, Langley House
Trust, Kaleidoscope, Friends Anonymous
and St.Luke's.
Each is concerned with a specific area
of need, compensating for the inability
of our social structure to adequately
tackle all the demands placed on it.

MY BROTHER'S KEEPER
This week's programme features the
Right Reverend Jim Thompson, Bishop of
Stepney, or, as he is more commonly
known by locals, plain Bishop Jim.
He argues that it is not enough to
simply declare that those who are
unable to cope have only themselves to
blame; that all men are born equal.
Some, he argues, are born in an
environment that disables them from the
start, increasing their need for the
help of some external body.

SHADOW OF THE CROSS
As the Papal visit to India continues,
Channel 4 takes a look at the growth
of Christianity in this largely Hindu
society in Shadow Of The Cross at
11.10pm on Wednesday.
Christianity first reached India befgre
Europe was converted. Thomas the
Apostle is believed to have landed at
Malabar around 52 AD and proceeded to
convert many Hindus in Southern India.
Centuries later, during 400 years of
colonial rule in Goa, the Portuguese
forced Christianity on the people.

SHADOW OF THE CROSS
Today around 40 million people in
India, approximately two thirds of the
population, are Christians - most of
them Roman Catholics.
This documentary film details this
conversion - the destruction of Hindu
temples and the social costs of these
events.
Shadow Of The Cross, on Wednesday at
11.10pm, aims to explore the
ambiguities and contradictions of the
Christian Church's role in Hindu
society in contemporary India.

SHADOW OF THE CROSS
How has the Church adapted itself to
the characteristics of the Indian
milieu and how is it changing to meet
the challenge of development in such a
vast and diverse country?
Shadow Of The Cross, on Wednesday at
11.10pm, looks at the part played by
the Church in everyday life in the
villages.
It also addresses some more
controversial matters such as the
Church's divided stand in the conflict
between the traditional fishermen and
rich trawler owners in Kerala.
