FRAGILE EARTH: SIARAU-THE TIDAL FOREST
The beauty and rich wildlife, depicted
in Saturday's Fragile Earth, is now
being threatened.
Mangroves grow in countries where the
population is rapidly expanding, and
they are usually regarded as useless.
Chopped down and drained the swamps are
being replaced by housing developments
agricultural plantations.
This is, as Siarau: The Tidal Forest
proved shortsighted, for the mangroves
form nurseries for many types of fish
and shellfish. Without these areas
coastal fisheries will be depleted.

FRAGILE EARTH: SIARAU-THE TIDAL FOREST
Mangrove swamps also act as important
stabilisers for coastal regions.
They prevent flooding and the erosion
of inland areas, but in turn are
affected by changes inland...
...if tropical deforestation inland
continues then storms will create
torrents of mud which will smother
the mangroves and asphyxiate marine
life.
The campaign to save tropical forests
is therefore crucial in saving the
mangrove swamps as well.
