TAKE A BREATHER
An hour of yoga every day can reduce
the likelihood of asthma attacks,
according to a report in the British
Medical Journal.
Yoga postures ─ breathing, joint
loosening and deep relaxation of
muscles ─ were taught to 53 sufferers
who practised them over several years.
They were compared with 53 other
asthmatics, and it was found that yoga
could play an important part in
reducing the stress and tension that
can trigger an asthma attack.

AVOIDING ECZEMA
Breastfed babies are less likely to
develop eczema as a reaction to cow's
milk, but this doesn't apply to every
baby.
A survey of breastfed babies at St
George's Hospital Medical School found
that a reaction to food the mother is
eating could be the cause, as it gets
into the milk.
So they are advising mothers who are
breastfeeding babies with eczema to
avoid cow's milk and eggs.

SMOKE AND EXERCISE
Many regular exercisers don't smoke, or
find it easier to give up, but what
of the effects of passive smoking?
Exercisers who live with smokers or who
work out indoors should be aware that a
recent study in North America found
that performance levels are reduced
when cigarette smoke is present in
inhaled air.
It's the carbon monoxide that affects
the blood's capacity to carry oxygen,
but the effects wear off after a couple
of hours. more follows >

HEALTH IN THE HIGH STREET
A new scheme to bring free health care
information into 12,000 High Street
pharmacies was launched this week.
First to arrive in pharmacies is the
Family Planning leaflet "There are
Eight Methods of Birth Control",
followed by information on smoking and
drugs over the coming months.
Advertising campaigns will back-up the
scheme designed to direct people who
might not be in touch with other
sources of professional help, to the
leaflets placed in familiar, friendly
surroundings. more follows >

PAIN IN THE BACK
Half of a random 2,000 people surveyed
by the Consumers' Association claimed
to have suffered from back pain.
Many blamed back pain on an accident
and over a quarter of women said it
began during pregnancy and nearly a
quarter of back pain sufferers had
their first attack in their teens or
younger.
Two-thirds of people with back pain
said that it had been cured or relieved
and half of them mentioned drugs.
Others found rest, spray/ointment, hot
bath/hot water bottle or osteopathy a
help. more follows >
