■ Irish Life is offering a new single
premium insurance bond, called the
Universal Investment Account. Requiring
a minimum lump sum of £1,000, the bond
also entitles you to free banking
through Western Trust and Savings.
■ Banks may have to open longer hours,
scrap charges and pay interest on
current accounts to keep up with the
competition from, say, building
societies, says a Euromonitor report.

■ EETPU, the electricians union, is
offering its 350,000 members a
comprehensive package of financial
services, including discounts on house
insurance, conveyancing and vehicle
breakdown and recovery services.
■ Nine City speculators, who broke the
share issue rules by making multiple
applications during the British Telecom
flotation in 1984, are to be prosecuted
■ From February 10th, Lloyds Bank is
cutting its endowment mortgage rate by
½%.

■ Unit trust group, Westavon, is no
longer paying sales intermediaries a
3% commission.
■ The Stock Exchange has announced
plans to boost share ownership from 6%
to 17% of the adult population once Big
Bang has happened this autumn. (See

■ West of England building society has
opened a high-interest, instant access
account. Premier Gold will pay 9.6% net
on sums of £5-10,000.

■ The organisers of last year's Money
'85 Show in London are holding a
Scottish Money Show in Glasgow from
May 15-17th this year.
■ The banks are proposing to send their
customers prospectuses for the British
Airways share flotation along with bank
statements when plans for the company's
flotation go ahead this year.
■ Lloyds Bank has said that the banks'
changeover to composite rate tax has
not resulted in non-taxpayers deserting
them to invest in national savings.
