PROSPECTS
Pincy and Billy are two likely lads, on
the dole and on the make in the Isle
of Dogs, and over the next twelve weeks
you can follow their escapades in a new
series on Wednesdays at 9pm: Prospects.
The two are in their early twenties,
with nothing to speak of except nous,
the weekly Giros and a council flat
for which they owe nine weeks rent.
But Billy and Pincy also live in the
Enterprise Zone. All around them they
can see there is money to be made,
and fiddles to be played.
So they pool their dole cheques to
start an enterprise, or twg, of their
own... More >

PROSPECTS
The trouble is that Billy and Pincy's
schemes lack the foresight and hard
work of some of their entrepreneurial
counterparts in Docklands.
And sometimes it just seems that the
world is set against them.
Take their computer dating service,
"Unidate". They get a big response
from the girls, but only one bloke
registers!
And if only Billy could find a video
that worked he could watch "Rocky" and
learn some tips to fulfil his dream
of becoming a boxer.

PROSPECTS
The engaging optimism of Billy and
Pincy is what grabs you in the opening
episode. It takes more than debt and
wasted energy to knock these two back.
The parts are taken by Brian Bovell
(Billy) who grew up in the East End,
and Gary Olsen (Pincy), who was born
not far away, in Lambeth.
Their escapades are set against the
wildly contrasting settings of the
slums and council blocks, and the
newly erected offices of prosperous
new companies.
The boys are caught in a trap between
the two.

PROSPECTS
Prospects was written by Alan Janes,
who already has several episodes of
Grange Hill, one of Minder and the
Film on Four Winter Flight under his
belt.
He has taken the popular formula of
two wideboys against the world, but
one is black, and they are struggling
to make things work in an area where
you need to be needle sharp.
Prospects is fast-moving, entertaining
and above all, more realistic than
many of it's predecessors.
In fact, it's so realistic you can
almost smell the eels and mash!

SHAKESPEARE
LIVES
Continuing the repeated series of
illuminating workshop-documentaries on
Shakespeare, director Michael Bogdanov
begins a two-part examination of The
Tempest.
This Wednesday's programme at 5.30pm
stars National Theatre actors including
Daniel Massey, Bill Wallis, Suzanne
Bertish, Clive Arrindell and Dinsdale
Landen.
Along with the actors, Bogdanov
attempts to resolve the arguments about
the piece.

SHAKESPEARE
LIVES
The Tempest, one of Shakespeare's most
dramatic plays, could simply be
regarded as simply a magical fantasy.
On the other hand it could be seen as
an explicit exploration of the
territory between sleeping and waking -
a dream within a dream about political
dominance and sexual power.
Conclusions about The Tempest are
pursued with the help of a lively and
argumentative audience at the
Roundhouse in London.
Shakespeare Lives is on Wednesday at
5.30pm.
