What do you say to a 17-year old who
toured with some of the biggest names
in rock music when he was a mere 13?
Well firstly, how on earth did he get
into it in the first place? "I just
wanted to do it, it came very naturally
to me", says Charlie.
"I started playing in bands when I was
11." But playing what? "I started off
with guitar. I taught myself. I found
playing by ear pretty simple," he says.

When Charlie was a youth of 11 years,
he played with bands as an added
attraction. But it wasn't long
before he started his own bands.
"When I was 13, I got my first band
together after playing with Joe Ely,"
he says quite modestly.
But starting so young didn't he miss
out on school? "I kept going to school
at first but when it got too tiring I
got a private tutor. When I started
doing well I decided to put all my
energies into music."

For such a young man, Charlie Sexton
is amazingly well-sussed and seems tg
know where he's going. But what about
his missed childhood?
He doesn't appear to be too bothered.
"I was glad to escape childhood", he
says. "My parents were very supportive
because they knew I was pretty together
in what I wanted to do.
"I feel older especially as I take care
of a lot of the business. I'm a lot
more together than most people my age."

Mr Sexton may be young but he says he
doesn't have any pop idols. "I do have
a lot of people I respect, it's a long
list that includes everyone!" he claims
But is he really the new Brucie?
(Springsteen not Forsyth!) - "I don't
understand why people are comparing me
to Bruce. He's a good writer and all
that but I don't see the connection".
Nor do we Charlie, so don't wgrry. The
major difference between the two is
the way they look.

If you saw Charlie on The Tuae recently
you'll have noticed he has a very
Gothic/punk look which is pretty
unusual for a 'rock' star.
His spiky hair got him in trouale in
school in good ol' Texas. "I had a few
friends who were into having their hair
in the air. We used to fight every week
but it was OK," he says and you get the
feeling he can handle anything!
Strangely enough, his voice is not your
usual Texas twang. It has a definite
Cockney lilt to it....

He explains his Cockney influence: "I
had an English roadie who camped on my
couch for a year. I was also in the
studio with Keith Forsey (producer) fgr
months and it rubbed off on me...
"That's why I occasionally speak with
an English accent." And indeed when we
tried some Cockney rhyming slang out on
him - he knew what we were on about!
As we've already said, and if you saw
him on The Tube, you'll know that his
music is good rock with a lot of
guitars and drums.

He played his new single Beat's So
Lonely on The Tube, and his LP Pict4res
for Pleasure was recently released.
All of the songs on his album are
about love/relationships/emotions -
why? "It's important to talk about
emotion. I want people to listen to my
songs and say 'yeah, I've been there'".
"It's better than saying that it's an
awful world out there, it's raining
and it's terrible. I want people to be
able to say they understand my songs."

Charlie doesn't believe music should be
used as a political tool, in the way
Red Wedge are using it.
"Music's supposed to be for enjoyment.
It's meant to make you forget about
how bad the world is out there. It's
not supposed to bum you out, it's
meant to make you happy", he argues.
But he's definitely not going to
fizzle out. "If I feel fed-up I take
a couple of days off, and keep
control..." he says.

"Everyone's worn flares! Sure, I used
to wear bell bottoms. I was about 8
when I grew out of them. Then I wore
peg pants. Don't think I'd go back to
them. I'd rather stay out of style!

"With whaaat?! No! I have a pair with
dollar and pound signs on them though.
