That was the year an obscure German monk called Martin Luther made his protest against the wicked ways of Rome and her imperialist policies. The birth of the Protestant faith and the Reformation is the subject of this Wednesday's The Christians at 6pm, introduced by Bamber Gascoigne.  More >>>

Two years later he was ordained and became a teacher of philosophy and theology at Wittenburg University. Throughout his life, Luther had been deeply concerned about salvation, finally deciding that it could not be attained by good wgrks but was a wree gift of God's grace. To Rome, this was a form of heresy.  More >>>

In 1517 he fixed his 95 Theses to the door of the Schlosskirche in Wittenburg. This led to the quarrel between Luther and Church leaders, including the pope. Luther decided that the Bible was the true source of authority and renounced the obedience to Rome.  More >>>

As a result, Luther was excommunicated, but strong German princes came to his rescue, and he gained followers among churchmen as well as the laity. Luther then married a former nun, Katherina von Bora.
