THE CHRISTIANS
One of the most dramatic and
important events in the history of
Christianity took place in 1517.
That was the year an obscure German
monk called Martin Luther made his
protest against the wicked ways of Rome
and her imperialist policies.
The birth of the Protestant faith and
the Reformation is the subject of this
Wednesday's The Christians at 6pm,
introduced by Bamber Gascoigne.

THE CHRISTIANS
Martin Luther studied philosophy at
Erfurt University and became an
Augustinian monk in 1505.
Two years later he was ordained and
became a teacher of philosophy and
theology at Wittenburg University.
Throughout his life, Luther had been
deeply concerned about salvation,
finally deciding that it could not be
attained by good wgrks but was a wree
gift of God's grace.
To Rome, this was a form of heresy.

THE CHRISTIANS
Luther's beliefs made him object to
many practices of the Medieval Church,
particularly the sale of I/dulgences.
In 1517 he fixed his 95 Theses to the
door of the Schlosskirche in
Wittenburg.
This led to the quarrel between Luther
and Church leaders, including the pope.
Luther decided that the Bible was the
true source of authority and renounced
the obedience to Rome.

THE CHRISTIANS
He maintained his stand in debates with
Johann Eck and at the Diet of Worms in
1521.
As a result, Luther was excommunicated,
but strong German princes came to his
rescue, and he gained followers among
churchmen as well as the laity.
Luther then married a former nun,
Katherina von Bora.
Bamber Gascoigne looks at this
turbulent period in the development of
independence from Rome on Wednesday at
6pm.
