TO H/LIDAY ... OR NOT?
Many experts believe that children
don't need holidays ─ but parents do.
There's something to be said for that
view ─ in fact quite a lot, because
there aren't many parents who wouldn't
benefit from a change of pace, routine
and place to help them get through the
next few months of daily living.
Holidays also are a chance to spend
more time with your children, to give
them more undivided attention and
perhaps to enjoy new activities and
experiences together.

TO HOLIDAY ... OR NOT?
So, with all those benefits and
requirements in mind, how can you
choose a holiday?
A holiday must suit all the family ─
or, if it isn't quite what they would
all have chosen, at least there is
enough opportunity for some enjoyment
for all and some give and take. There's
nothing like a martyr about the place
to ruin things for everyone!
What suits one ─ sand, sea and snoozes
─ may seem deadly boring to others,
while traipsing round archaeological
sites may seem heaven to adults, but
the opposite to the kids more follows >

TO HOLIDAY ... OR NOT?
Holiday Camps have lost their Wakey-
Wakey, Hi-de-Hi image. In fact they can
be the answer for all age groups. Many
now provide a wealth of free
entertainment and it need not be of the
Knobbly Knees competition variety.
Choose your site and tour operator, but
most now provide benefits such as
tennis courts, riding and sailing. For
younger ones there are babyminders,
baby listening service, clubs, leisure
complexes and all sorts of other
devices to keep them occupied and
happy. more follows >

TO H/LIDAY ... OR NOT
British seaside resorts are also
picking up their image. With last
year's "summer" in mind, local councils
have realised the necessity of
providing alternative entertainment for
those days when the sun stays
resolutely behind clouds.
In fact some ninety odd seaside resorts
have been spending small fortunes to
make sure that they offer children's
playgrounds, amusement parks, indoor
sports centres and other alternatives.

Scarborough, on England's east coast,
offers several recent improvements, two
of which have been Kinderland and two
of the world's longest water slides.
Kinderland offers tricycle tracks,
roller racers, skates and much more
for £2 a day, while the water slide
gives you a 150 metre spin followed by
a dip in a nice warm pool.
Bournemouth has built an International
Centre with it's own Leisure Pogl with
mock beach, wave machine, palms, sauna
and solarium. Plus parachuting teddies
under the title Who Bears Wins.

TO HOLIDAY ... OR NOT?
If hotels are more to your taste, then
there are many that now offer the
services of nannies, babyminders and
plug-in listening facilities. They are
not all vastly expensive top-of-the
range hotels: many are family run,
small and unpretentious ─ but above all
welcoming and understanding of
children's and parent's needs.
Get in as many brochures as you can and
pore over them together. Bookshops are
now full of paperbacks dealing with
different varieties of holidays too, so
have a browse. Happy holidays.
