JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - LIVE
After riots at previous gigs, nobody
could predict what would happen on the
7th of February 1986 at the University
of East Anglia, Norwich.
Support band MEUTA were brilliant, the
high point of their set being a superb
rendition of THE TROGG'S "Wild Thing".
So at last on walked JESUS AND MARY
CHAIN, with the human windmill B/BBY
GILLESPIE in the line up. Immediately
plastic glasses were thrown on stage
and JIM REID told everybody not to be
"so fuckin' stupid" and walked off,
followed by the rest of the band...

JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - LIVE
However, the band ambled on again,
eventually, to perform nine tracks, of
which two were new and included the
excellent "The Hardest Walk".
Their sound was superb, the squealing
feedback drowned by perfect songs
reminiscent of THE BUZZCOCKS.
The JESUS AND MARY CHAIN will have to
tighten themselves up a bit more befgre
they get any of the recognition they
deserve though.

The Old And The New by A CERTAIN RATIO
ACR have been making (unheard of)
records since 1978. This LP consists of
most of their singles accompanied with
b-sides. Attatched to the sleeve is the
single "Shack Up" with its irresistable
bass line which relentlessly paces the
rhythm throughout.
As they demonstrated with their
appearance on The Tuae, the percussion
clatters and bass conquers, with
hush-hush vocals acting almost as
background noise.

The Old And The New by A CERTAIN RATIO
The near secret image of ACR casts a
veil over their personalities, but
their style of music is unmistakably
dance. The later material on side twom
sounds more confident than the earlier,
amateurish side one. From the film "A
Letter to Brezhnev" comes the single
"Wild Party" with its crashing drums
and the usual irritating vocals. It
glides along with occasional jerkiness
due to the mechanical bass sequencing.
If you want solid dance music, buy this
LP. If you want dance music with
make-up and haircuts...there's always
FIVE STAR! by JAMES BROWN.

Album by PUBLIC IMAGE LTD.
JOHN LYDON and Co. return with their
first "album" in two years, and his
first recording since the excellent
"Time Zone" with AFRIKA BAMBAATAA.
"Album" sees a change in line-up and a
change in style for P.I.L. LYDON has
recruited several musicians of varying
backgrounds, including GINGER BAKER on
drums, STEVE VIE on guitar, RYUICHI
SAKAMOTO on keyboards, and SHANKAR on
violin.

Album by PUBLIC IMAGE LTD.
The style of the album is quite varied,
ranging from an almost heavy metal
sound to its Asian influences, "FFF",
has a strong up-tempo beat with some
heard-rocking guitar playing. "Rise"
(or "Single", as it's called in single
form) comes next, and with the line
"Anger is an energy", it is apparent
that LYDON's thinking has not changed
much since 1976.

Album by PUBLIC IMAGE LTD.
The track "Round" introduces an almost
Indan/Eastern sound, with SHANKAR's
violin playing coming to the fore. The
drumming is very powerful throughout
"Album", the track "Fishing" being a
perfect example of this.
For someone who has produced some
fairly off-beat music with the previous
P.I.L. albums, "Album" seems to be a
promising change of direction.
