STREETWISE (18)
Directed by Martin Bell
I urge you not to miss this compelling
documentary which vividly examines the
bleak lives of youngsters ranging from
13 to 19 who survive on the streets of
Seattle by pimping, prostitution, drug
dealing in a minor way and petty theft.
Bell deserves great credit for his film
which, despite some rough edges, makes
its disturbing points with considerable
power, often movingly and without any
sentimentality or preaching. The result
is a riveting picture of the underside
of urban life which commands attention.

SPIES LIKE US (PG)
Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd
Here is a real throw-back to all those
old Bob Hope-Bing Crosby 'Road' movies
(with Hope himself turning up as an
unbilled guest). Terminally bungling
Chase and Ackroyd play CIA agents up
against the KGB, unaware that they are
only decoys to protect the real spies.
The level of humour is as much Abbott
and Costello as Hope and Crosby, but
both stars work hard to chase up the
laughs and, while it peters out before
the end, there are lots of good gags
on offer, briskly directed by John
Landis. more follows >

THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN (U)
Voices: Jim Henson, Frank Oz
Will Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of
the famous foam-rubber stars manage to
get their musical staged on Broadway?
The answer, of course, is obvious and,
in the process they generate plenty of
lively comedy in this, the third - and
the best - of their big-screen outings.
The human guest stars include splendid
Joan Rivers, Dabney Coleman, who is top
notch, Liza Minelli - who is pallid -
Gregory Hines and James Coco. They try
hard but, inevitably, the very talented
Muppets simply wipe them off the screen
