in pharmaceutical group Wellcome will
be successful in buying shares.
■ Tunbridge Wells in Kent is to follow

by introducing its own credit card. The
interest rate will be about 28.3% and
shoppers can use the card from June 7th

■ House prices rose by 8.7% over the
year to January 1986, according to the
Halifax House Price Index.
■ The Anglia Building Society is
increasing the interest rate on its
Instant Gold Account by ¼%. Balances
over £5,000 will now earn 9½% net, with
9¾% net on £10,000 or more.
■ The final 40p payment on British
Telecom shares is due by April 9th.
BT will be contacting all shareholders
with details on how to pay from 28th
February.

■ The Wider Share Ownership Council has
spoken out against executive share
option schemes, which tend to benefit
only senior executives and directgrs.
The Council wants the Chancellor to
grant tax relief on these only if the
company also offers a broader-based
employee share plan.
■ Inflation at 3%, the economy growing
at 2½% a year, unemployment around the
3m mark, base rates at 7% in 1988 and
the $/£ exchange rate levelling out at
just under 1.50 ─ that's how Midland
Bank economists see Britain's future.
