France - the great unpackaged adventure
is so easy to get to yet still unspoilt
full of charm, fabulous food and
wonderful wines.
Huge slices of the country are still
unknown to many tourists who pass
through some of the most spectacular
and peaceful countryside in Europe
heading for the overcroweded South -
while many of the rest of us know
France only as the destination of our
cheese and wine buying day trips.
If you've taken the time to discover
the country you'll know there's much
more to it than that! more follows >

Rural France is tailor made for a
motoring holiday. A freewheeling
holiday spent discovering new hotels
and exquisite cuisine each night is
on of life's great pleasures.
Hotels are generally reasonably priced
and, if you shop around, some are
unbelievably cheap. You pay for the
room - so a young family sharing can
tour very reasonably. The food and
wine is magnificent almost everywhere -
avoid roadside cafes and the more
obvious tourist stops and you'll find
amazing prices and quality.

Caravan and Camping holidays in France
have shown tremendous growth in the
past 10 years with more and more
people opting for the outdoor life.
There are now several camping/caravan
package companies offering packages
which include car ferry prices -
especially popular for family holidays.
Major operators have left France alone
- it's too close to merit charter
flight discounting and official policy
is cool towards mass tourism.

The Riviera still attracts thousands of
Brits - in search of pricey sun, sand
and glamour. Many others head for the
peaceful rural charms of Alsace or
Burgundy.
The Loire Valley, renowned for its
wines and fine Chateaux, is well worth
a visit. Brittany and Normandy remain
firm favourites - both of them within
very easy reach.
Finally - don't dismiss the Dordogne
and its fabulous scenery (both above
and below ground!).

If you're planning a touring holiday of
France there are a host of very good
guides and maps to keep by you. The
Michelin "red book" is excellent as are
the AA's road maps.
France often suffers simply because it
is our nearest neighbour - don't allow
familiarity to breed contempt for
Europe's most varied and satisfying
holiday destination. For more
