MORE THAN MEETS
THE EYE
Tomorrow, Channel 4 gives you a chance
to see a delightful documentary series
previously seen only in the south-west
of England.
Written and presented by Sue Phillips,
More Than Meets The Eye takes a look
at flowers, their role in our history,
and flower arranging.
Flowers are part of our way of life.
Wj give them to loved ones, to the
sick, as an apology, as a thankyou,
as a pure gift...
...in fact they adorn our lives from
birth, through marriage and they even
act as a tribute at funerals.

MORE THAN MEETS
THE EYE
Over the centuries images of flowers
have appeared in everything from
pottery and fabrics to coats of arms,
and other insignia.
Countries have developed their own
particular style and tradition in
their use of flowers, particularly
in the way people arrange them to
decorate their homes.
More Than Meets The Eye illustrates
the history of flower arranging from
Ancient Egypt to the present day
styles ranging from stark Japanese
Ikebana to the more earthy Dutch.

MORE THAN MEETS
THE EYE
The Cottagers' Treasure is the opening
programme in the series and it looks
at the homely English traditions of
flower arrangement.
John Wareing, a detective in the police
force will be demonstrating this style,
showing the stages by which it has been
refined over the years from its humble
beginnings in a medieval house.
More Than Meets The Eye starts its
C4 run tomorrow at 5.30pm, and if
you would like some basic tips on how
to keep flowers fresher for longer,
see Fourfront on 451/2.

SHAKESPEARE
LIVES
Here's a little test for you...
From which one of Shakespeare's plays
do the following quotations come:
"Where the bee sucks, there suck I
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry."
"O brave new world,
That has such people in't".?
Stuck? Well, they are both from The
Tempest, acknowledged as one of
Shakespeare's most difficult plays,
and it is the subject of this week's
edition of Shakespeare Lives.

SHAKESPEARE
LIVES
Is The Tempest simply a magical fantasy
or is it an exploration of the no mans
land that lies between sleeping and
waking?
Or is it a dream within a dream about
political dominance and sexual power?
Michael Bogdanov and a group of actors
from the National Theatre (including
Suzanne Bertish and Bill Wallis) will
try to unravel these questions in
front of a lively audience.
Performing scenes and discussing them
makes the work more accessible, as you
can see in this Wednesday's Shakespeare
Lives, at 5.30pm on Channel 4.
