THE CHRISTIANS
Throughout Europe in the 16th Century,
the effects of Martin Luther's
rebellious Reformation continued to
have strong effects.
Half of Europe defected from the Roman
Catholic Church. The effects were felt
first in Germnay and then in Scotland,
Scandinavia, England and Switzerland.
Finally the Reformation made some
impact in France, but it hardly touched
the Iberian peninsula or Italy. To this
day, these countries are still
staunchly catholic.

THE CHRISTIANS
This Wednesday's programme at 6pm
details not only the lasting effects of
the Reformation but also the
reformation within the Roman church.
The Church of Rome fought back, not
only in Europe, but in the new wgrlds
of Asia and the Americas.
One of their new weapons were the
Jesuits: storm-troopers who specialised
in the conquest of souls and who
became the feared spearhead of the
Counter-Reformation.

THE CHRISTIANS
The Jesuits (officially the Society of
Jesus) were founded by St Ignatius of
Loyola in 1540.
The Jesuits were the first Christian
missionaries in the New World and they
anatgonised many European rulers
because they gave allegiance only to
their general in Rome and to the pope.
In 1948, five Jesuits were martyred in
Canada undergoing missionary work
amongst the Indians (which they had
been doing since 1609).

THE CHRISTIANS
Under the leadership of Isaac Jogues
and Jean de Brebeuf, the Jesuits wgrked
to convert the Hurons and the Iroquois
to Catholicism.
Brebeuf and four others were killed by
the superstitious Iroquois after a
series of epidemics in 1648.
This Wednesday's edition of The
Christians at 6pm looks at the work
