SELF-CATERING HOLIDAYS...
"Self-catering on holiday? I couldn't
stand that! We go away for a rest - not
to take the kitchen sink with us!"
That used to be the kind of remark
often made to our family when the
children were young.
There's something to be said for the
attitude: parents want a rest as well
as children but in many ways it isn't
realistic to expect that if you have
young children you can escape from all
the chores they entail. Babies still
need washing, changing, feeding and
persuading to sleep in the smartest
hotel or your own home. more follows >

SELF-CATERING H/LIDAYS....
So self-catering has many advantages.
Not the least is that it usually works
out a lot cheaper than paying for
service.
You're paying a rent, of course, but
food and entertainment often can be
covered from the amount of housekeeping
you'd spend at home anyway.
But not the least to consider is the
freedom of preparing and eating meals
when and how you choose. There's no
concern about whether the food will be
acceptable to the kids: you know it
will be - because you're choosing it.

SELF-CATERING HOLIDAYS....
Nor need cooking be a chore. There is
so much variety of convenience foods
about nowadays and holidays are the
time to take advantage of them, even if
you prefer to "cook from the raw" when
you're at home.
It is sensible, if you can, to budget a
little extra money for food when youWre
on holiday, for the occasional treat.
And treat yourself too, to the
occasional meal out and away from the
kitchen.

SELF-CATERING HOLIDAYS....
If your family includes a young baby
still in nappies then now is the time -
even if you don't use them normally -
to treat yourself to disposable nappies
They save time, work and trouble and if
slightly more expensive then it's worth
it.
If you're travelling by car to your
holiday destination, one useful tip is
to prepare the fisrt evening's meal and
take it with you. A casserole which has
only to be popped into the oven and
reheated, as well as a favourite
pudding already made means that you can
settle very quickly into your new home

SELF-CATERING HOLIDAYS......
Think ahead for those days when the
beach might be a bit chilly or wet and
take one or two standby games, card
packs, and plenty of books, both for
yourself and the children.
A scrapbook for each child in which
they can keep a holiday diary will give
endless hours of peace...perhaps it
could be something they do each evening
They can stick in souvenirs of places
visited, write up notes on what they
have seen, food eaten, new friends made
and all sorts of other things to keep
the holiday alive in their memories.
