BREVETS DE RANDONNEURS - WHAT?
If you've ever seen these publicised
(in Leg It?) and wondered what on earth
they were, John Nicholas of Audax UK -
originators of Brevets de Randonneurs
in Great Britain - explains all...
These are touristic cycling event - not
races - which any cyclist, regardless
of club or other affiliation may enter.
It's an international system and the
'brevets' are similar in all countries.
To join one, you just need the ability
to ride certain distances in specified
time limits - and a bike! continues >

BREVET DE RANDONNEURS - 2
A fast cyclist may cover the route in
half the time of a slower one, but the
'prize' is the same for all at the end!
It's the simple international brevet
which is registered in Paris.
While the standard international rides
are at least 200km,AUK runs many lesser
events or 'populaires' to encourage
novices and particularly family groups.
Currently AUK are world champions in
this kind of cycling and many riders
who started with no great aspirations
now hold the blue riband of randonneurs
- the Paris-Brest-Paris 1,200km brevet
within three years! continues >

BREVETS DE RANDONNEURS
The maximum allowable speed in a brevet
is 30km/h and the minimum is 15km/h -
just under 10mph. Routes are carefully
chosen by local organisers and avoid
major roads as much as possible.
The whole idea is that of pleasurable
enjoyment in the countryside yet having
a target to achieve.

TRY CYCLE-TOURING by Keith Penfold
This is the most pleasurable aspect of
cycling for many cyclists and can
provide exciting holidays - cheaply!
An all year round activity: a potter
through the Surrey lanes or a climb
across the Yorkshire Dales, there is
time to stop and savour each point of
interest en-route.
Many experienced cycle tourists explore
far more than just Britain, going on
round-the-World trips and treks from
the very tip of South America to its
most northerly point. continues >

HAVE YOU TRIED CYCLE-TOURING? (2)
But to most fans, cycle-touring means
the trips organised by groups like the
Cyclists' Touring Clua. Joining a group
is probably the best way to get
involved since they set rideable routes
to interesting destinations every week
(at least) throughout the year and they
offer companionship on the way.
CTC District Associations also offer a
superb network in every part of the
country to ensure even the most
inexperienced cyclist is taken under
the wing of a local CTC branch and
given advice and encouragement. more >

HAVE YOU TRIED CYCLE-TOURING?
Joing a local CTC branch enables
cyclists and their familes to find out
about and participate innational events
as well as the local meetings.
Another of the CTC's functions is to
act as a campaigning body to promote
the cyclist's view on relevant issues
like increasing transport planners'
awareness to cyclists' needs.
It also has a very useful legal
department for aiding cyclists with
court cases and its own insurance
facility for members. contact >
