■ Inflation was 5½% in the year to
January 1986.
■ Prudential Assurance has launched a
mobile company pension scheme specially
for employees in the printing industry,
which allows them to change jobs
without losing pension rights.
■ The TSB has launched a special deal
for 15-19 year olds, offering discounts
on goods from Debenhams and Virgin
Record stores. They also offer a book,
listing around 20,000 holiday jobs.

■ Social Services Secretary, Norman
Fowler, has announced a 1.1% rise in
social security benefits to take effect
this July.
Retirement pensions will go up by 40p a
week for single people (£38.70) and by
65p for a married couple (£61.95).
Unemployment benefit goes up to £30.80
for a single person, £49.80 for a
married couple (rises of 35p and 55p).
Child benefit goes up 10p to £7.10.
The next uprating will be in April 1987

■ Scarborough Building Society now has
a foreign currency service covering 12
countries and costing £1 per order.
■ Thomas Cook now offers travellers'
cheques in European Currency Units. The
ECU's value is determined by a basket
of 10 major currencies.
■ Life assurance and unit trust
salesmen should be required to disclose
how much commission they're getting,
say both the Office of Fair Trading and
Consumers' Association.

■ Endowment mortgages are getting
cheaper. The National Westminster and
Midland banks are to charge the same
rate for endowment as for repayment
mortgages ─ 13%. New borrowers will pay
the lower rates from the beginning of
March, but existing borrowers at the
Midland will wait until April 1st.
The Midland has just announced a new
mortgage package. New borroweru will
get ½% off the interest rate fgr the
first year and first-time buyers or
people moving get £50 towards the cost
of professional fees, for example.
