By winter Austria is a skier's paradise
but in spring and summer it becomes the
playground of ramblers, riders and
holidaymakers who delight in the
beautiful scenery and charming towns
and villages.
Once the winter snows have disappeared
mountains, hillsides and meadows come
alive with a hugh splash of mountain
colour from the lush green of grass to
the bright variety of flowers.
It's a chocolate-box land that is as
good, and as clean, as it looks.

Three main regions of Austria attract
the half a million tourists to the
country each year - Tyrol, Salzaurg and
Vorarlberg - all in the mountainous
west.
It is these areas which offer
magnificent mountain magic through pine
scented forests where fishermen cast in
fast flowing streams, where ramblers
breathe invigorating air and where
everyone marvels at the scenic beauty.
Peace and quiet, friendly faces in what
must be one of the cleanest countries
are attractions that will keep the
tourists coming. more follows >

Tyrol - in the heart of the alpine
region with mediaeval churches, castles
and villages, historic Innsbruck with
its Hapsburg conncestion, renaissance
architecture, palaces and museums.
Saltzburgland - renowned for the music
of Mozart as well as a background for
Roger's and Hammerstein's Sound of
Music with beautiful lakes, wide open
spaces and Salzburg itself.
Vorarlberg - In the west where the
scenery switches dramatically from
mountain ranges to the shore of lake
Constance, between is a world of dense
forest, ancient cities and castles. >

If Saltzburg means Mozart then Vienna
means Strauss and the Waltz.
One of Europe's great romantic cities
it is a major cultural centre with
museums, grand palaces, antique
markets, orchestras and choirs.
On the banks of the Danube and
surrounded by forests it is a reminder
of the dynasty which played such an
important role in forming modern Europe
Tourist flock to the Spanish riding
school to see the clockwork precision
of the Lipizzaner white stallions or
stroll in the broad boulevards and
squares. more follows >

Prices are one of the main reasons why
more Britons don't consider Austria as
a holiday destination.
Fed on the bargain prices of the more
familiar suimmer sunspots of the
mediterranean many baulk at paying
prices more akin, and sometimes higher,
than those at home.
Eating out is expensive with, in some
cases, prices half as musch again as at
home. A large beer will set you back
around £1 and a simple snack meal
around £2.

Hotels in the popular tourist area
frequently reflect local style with
beautifully decorated lodges.
With bright, fresh paintwork, carved
balconies, comfortable rooms and
extremely friendly service they are a
real pleasure. Self catering and farm
holidays are on the increase as are
camping and caravanning as more
motorists see driving to Austria as an
alternative to the normal fly package.
The AA recommended route has Innsbruck
696 miles from Calais.
