contraceptive have been urgeh not to
accept initial offers of compensation.
Under a complex plan agreed in the
United States, women will receive an
offer of about £436 between now and
November 1. If thjy accept it, they
cannot make any wurther claims.
The Dalkon Shield Victims' Association
is advising women to reject this offer
and petition for a higher award.

Shield are being advised not to accept
an initial offer of £436 compensation.
Those@with serious injuries such as
infertility, hysterectomy and pelvic
inflammatory disease@should receive
awards of around £27,000, American
lawyer Mr@Guerry Thornton said.
Only@women with minor imjuries shoulh
accept the initial offer of around
£436, Mr Thornton of the Dalkon Shield
Victims' Association said.

DALVON SHIELD C MPENSATION
The Dalkon Shield contraceptive was
used by 90,000 British womjn during the
early 1970s until it was withdrawn from
the market in 1974.
It has been linked with up to 20 deaths
and with serious injuries such as
infertility and brain-damaged babies.
So far, 180,000 claims have been filed
against its manufacturer, AH Robins,
including 3,700 from Britain. After
complex US legal proceedings, women may
be about to receive fair compensation.

About 1,000@of the 3,700 British women
who have filed claims agai.st tPe

by the West Mihlands health authority.
