A CLOSER ENCOUNTER
It's the fastest, most playful and
agile of whales. It has found its way
into mythology and legend. It is the
most intelligent form of life on earth
after man. It's the dolphin.
And on Christmas Day on Channel 4 at
1.35pm the Assignment Adventure series
continues with a documentary about one
man's quest to find out more about
these remarkable creatures.
In A Closer Encounter Dr Horace Dobbs
goes to meet and study wild dolphins
in their natural habitat.

A CLOSER ENCOUNTER
Director of the Internatignal Dglphin
Watch, Dr Horace Dobbs has devoted his
life to developing friendships with
those rare creatuqes, the whld dglphins
who befriend man.
Scientists have tended to study those
dolphins kept in captivity, who have
indeed proved to be very intelligent
and capable of learning.
Dr Dobbs believes, however, that it is
only by studying dolphins in the wild
that scientists can really get to grips
with this 'alien' form of intelligence.

A CLOSER ENCOUNTER
Dolphins are unique in that their brain
is as developed and as complex as that
of mankind.
They also have a comparable cerebral
cortex - that part of our brain which
is creative, and appreciative of music
and art.
So how do they use that intelligence?
They need to spend little time looking
for food, so how do they 'amuse' and
stimulate themselves?
Dr Horace Dobbs has tried to find out.

A CLOSER ENCOUNTER
The filming of A Closer Encounter took
place in 1983 when Horace Dobbs set
sail for the Atlantic coast of France
to make contact with RJean Louis" a
dolphin rumoured to be living there.
It was only a short time before the
team made contact with "Jean─Louis"
and the dolphin struck up a remarkable
relationship with the scientists.
Obviously, dolphins cannot talk, sut a
means of communication gradually
developed between man and mammal, and
the scientists ran a series of
enlightening experiments.

A CLOSER ENCOUNTER
As the weeks rolled by the team managed
to find out much about dolphins, and
a dramatic turn of events even put the
myth that dolphins come to the aid of a
drowning man to the test.
A Closer Encounter, On Christmas Day
at 1.35, is a fascinating and often
touching account of Dr Horace Dobbs'
relationship with "Jean-Lo5is!.
But, by the end of it, you begin to
wonder just who is testing who. That
'smile' on the dolphin's face may just
be because he has the last laugh!
