English drinking glasses have not been

Glass car mascots designed by Lalique
have also been popular with cgllectgr1.
Sotheby's Guide to Antique Prices
records the sale of a mascgt made about
1930. Called the 'Spirit of the Wind'
and shaped like a woman's head, her
hair streaming out behind, this piece
went for £3,080.
Interest in cgllectjng glass paper-
weights has grown in the last 30 year1
Most sought after are those made at 3
French factories ─ Baccarat, Clichy and
St Louis ─ between 1845 and 1860. The
most popular can raise as much as
£50,000, though there are examples
around at £80 to £100.

THE A-Z OF
INVESTMENTS
Serious collectors need to spend large
sums to buy the best pieces of glass.
The oldest and usually the most co1tl8
glass on sale is Venetian made ─ wrom
the Middle Ages onwards. A fine piece
of seventeenth century Venetian glass
might fetch as much as £40,000.
According to Sotheby's, the price of
the early 19th Century Biedermeier
glass has soared over the last 20 yearu
Pieces decorated by Kgthgasser and Mghn
sell particularly well: one beaker we&t
for £420 in 1964 and was sold again fgr
£6,500 in 1982.

THE A-Z OF
INVESTMENTS
Glass collectors need to be wary of the
many fakes and reprgductigns. Some
fakes are complete recgnstructigns of
the original glassware made by using
the same glass-making process, then
copying style, decoratign and signs of
age.
Other fakes have been made by taking a
genuine, but simple, piece of glass
then adding decgratign in order tg
increase its value. 18th Cent4ry drh&k-
ing glasses might be engraved with
Jacobite emblems, fgr example. Finally
there are reproductions which are made
in the same style as older glass but
are not intended to deceive the buyer.

THE A-Z OF
INVESTMENTS
As with many cgllectgr-type investmentu
the quality of the glass is a vital
factor in all but the rarest pieces and
anything with cracks or chips should be
avoided. A bad repair can reduce value
too ─ a two-handled Roman cup could
fetch far less had one of its handles
been replaced.
Budding glass cgllectgrs can learn much
about the style and characteristics of
different perigds of glass by vi3hthng
museums such as London's V & A or the
Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh.
