The Sweetest Girl - MADNESS (Zarjazz)
SCRITTI fans in this country get to see
and hear so little of the man, that
even a cover version of a GREEN song is
better than nothing!
Very nice of MADNESS to do this for
them, and they do it very nicely, tog.
If anyone else had done this, mind you,
it might not have got a great deal of
airplay. It's not fast, it+s not slow -
it almost drags, but it has been
blessed with the MADNESS touch, which
somehow makes it OK. It's slick,
stylish and does justice to the
original. Another MADNESS Top 20 hit.

Sanctify Yourself by SIMPLE MINDS

Now this is a bit more like it. I mean
they've been a bit dreamy and wishy
washy over the last couple of singles,
haven't they? This has got more guts.
Like "Waterfront" and other earlier
stuff, the band's as well as the
producer's energy shines through the
very full arrangement.
A little U2-ish too, dare I say it, and
definitely a hit for SIMPLE MINDS. You
know that could almost be BONO ...

Rise by PUBLC IMAGE LIMITED (Virgin)
The ill mannered, greasy, snotty nosed
boy who won't grow up and cultural
exile JOHN LYDON is back with something
that sounds much more like THE CLASH
than his old group THE SEX PISTOLS.
Again, like one of his best singles
ever "This Is Not A Love Song", it's
difficult to put your finger on why you
like this one. Lacking traditignal fgrm
and style, it's somehow very stylish. A
grinding, monotonous thudding flow of
voice, guitar and cardboard boxes, it+s
a compelling, atmospheric number that
probably won't be a hit, but probably
