BABY FEEDS - ALUMINIUM RISKS...
Paediatricians in Manchester and
Salford are urging the DHSS to lay down
restrictive recommendations for baby
feed manufacturers and for the
aluminium concentratign premitted in
water used for baby feeds.
According to the doctors babies born
prematurely and infants with defective
kidneys are likely to be poisoned by
aluminium in special feeds prepared for
them in and out of hospital.
* Potentially toxic and even lethal
doses of the metal are being found in >

SMOKING - TOUGHER WARNINGS URGED
In the build up to National No-Smoking
Day, March 12th, demands are being made
on the government to print tougher
warnings on cigarette packets.
Already, the Irish government has
decided to take a harder line, and will
be replacing existing cigarette packet
warnings such as "Smoking seriously
damages your health" with the starker
"Smoking kills".
And in Geneva, the World Health
Organisation is campaigning for more
non-smoking areas in public places.

BRING BACK THE BEDSIDE MANNER....
In these days of high technology
medicine, doctors have forgotten how to
communicate with their patients, say a
team of consultants at Sunderland
Royal Infirmary.
Doctors no longer listen to their
patients or seem to know how to talk to
them, says Dr.Tony Martin from the
Sunderland team.
So, to help doctors regain their old
"bedside manner skills" Dr. Martin and
colleagues have produced a "bedside
manners guide". more follows >

REPORTING ACCIDENTS AT WORK....
New regulations are to come before
Parliament requiring employers to
report work-related diseases among
staff to the H.E.C.
As of the 1.4.86 employers must report
dangerous accidents, death or injuries
involving their staff to the Health and
Safety Executive.
But the British Medical Asociation has
voiced concern over the matter saying
that an incorrect diagnosis might
mislead employers, the executive and
cause delays in identifying the
occupational causes. more follows >
