RELIABILITY IN THE KITCHEN
How often has your washing machine
spewed suds while you've taken the
morning off work waiting for the repair
person, who doesn't turn up until
after lunch?
If that story is all too familiar,
you'll be interested in the results of
a survey by the Consumers' Association
into the worst and best brands of
appliances for reliability and repairs.
Individual models change so frequently
that the overall picture that emerges
is one of which brands do best.

RELIABILITY IN THE KITCHEN
Some years ago British-made electrical
appliances were way behind their
imported counterparts when it came to
reliability.
They have made up on that ground, so
that now it is safe to say that British
and European appliances are now equally
reliable.
It is worth remembering that machines
with a British brand name may well have
been manufactured abroad, so it's not
always easy to tell where they've come
from. more follows >

Which? magazine brand analysis of
washing machine, dishwasher and tumble
drier repairs shows that agents for
Hoover and Hotpoint were quicker than
average in making the initial call.
Zanussi needed fewer visits, on
average, to complete the repair ─ 9
out of 10 were completed first time.
AEG, Philips and Service were slower.
Although AEG did well on reliability,
they took longer to make the call and
only fixed 6 out of 10 repairs after
their first visit. more follows >

RELIABILITY IN THE KITCHEN
Philips washing machines and tumble
driers needed fewer repairs in the
first four years, but their dishwashers
fell way behind Bosch, Zanussi and
Indesit.
Electrolux vacuum cleaners emerged as
more reliable than Hoover ─ the two
most popular brands.
Creda came out bottom of the list for
washing machines, but top for tumble
driers, making a stacking set of both
from them a difficult choice!

RELIABILITY IN THE KITCHEN
Of course, in the ideal world,
consumers would prefer domestic
appliances not to break down in the
first place.
Freezers and microwaves are now quite
reliable and TVs have improved greatly
over the last five years. It's a shame
that washing machines and dishwashers
don't have such a good record.
There is also some room for improvement
when it comes to repairs. Maintenance
contracts are generally not worth the
expense.
