AN/THER ONE
Rebecca Quinn, 4, of Leeds, is the
latest profoundly deaf child to be
going to Los Angeles for a cochlear
implant.
An appeal was launched in the summer
for the £25,000 needed for the trip and
it topped £45,000 before it was closed.
Her mother says, "Rebecca will have to
return 6 weeks after the initial
operation to have a receiver, which
will allow her to hear, fitted. We hope
the first words she will learn to say
will be "thank you" to all who have
made it possible."

HELPING HAND
Tom Johnson who is deaf and lives near
Swindon has taught sign language for
the last four years but thought he
would have to give it up because the
Department of Education have decided
that all tutors must have official
qualifications and he would have to
take a 3-week course at Durham
University costing £650 to get them.
Married with three children, he could
not afford that but the regulars at his
local clua heard of his plight and
raised most of the money which will
enable him to attend the course after
all.
