THE DANCE GOES
ON
Almost one year ago Stephanie Taylor,
20, of Southport, who has been deaf
since birth, was given the opportunity
to study with the Stuttgart Ballet
Company in West Germany for one year.
The company has been so impressed with
her progress that they have now offered
her a full scholarship for 2 to 3
years.
Stephanie is anxious to take up the
offer which would enable her to qualify
as a teacher and pass on her skills to
other deaf children but as her mother
says, "Money for incidental expenses is
a problem but we are doing all we can
to give her the chance."

PLAY IT AGAIN
Retired welder Jack Watkins,76, is deaf
but that hasn't stopped him composing
songs.
His latest one "The Same Old You" has
been widely praised and he hopes that
it can be marketed professionally.
Jack usually sells his songs to friends
and neighbours for charities and even
this way one song last year raised £170
for the Spastics Society.
His latest song has been dedicated to
the charity "Age Concern" and we're
sure all viewers will hope it will take
off and Age Concern will reap the
benefit.

ANYONE FOR A
FLIGHT
Ben Love, a deaf man from Swansea, has
an unfulfilled ambition -to be a pilot.
As his disability makes this
impossible and he fears his balance,
affected through meningitis, would not
allow him to fly gliders he has found
an alternative - flying planes on his
home computer.
The computer game which simulates
flying is extraordinarily authentic, he
says, and the sense of achievement when
you successfully complete a flight
relying on hand and eye co-ordination
and the ability to think of several
things at once is really something. He
recommends this pastime to anyone bored
with TV.

VIEWER'S VIEW
J.Sexton of Retford writes:-
"I feel I must write in support of
Andrew Gough who wrote to Earuhot about
"moaning viewers". It is neither the
fault of the BBC or ITV that some
people are deaf yet they are giving a
great service to them.
I have owned a teletext TV for several
years and the quality and quantity of
subtitles have improved enormously in
that time.
We now have subtitles on all 4 channels
so some are bound to clash at least we
have a choice of programmes to watch.
It seems that only the moaners bother
to write."
