EARPHONES DANGER
At a national environmental health
congress recently a warning was given
on the use of personal earphones.
It was said that the habitual use of
these earphones could lead to deafness.
Long periods of noise can be
experienced by young people using them
for reception of taped music and that
coupled with a possible noisy workplace
and long sessions at discos, with music
amplified to an extreme degree, could
damage the hearing process and induce
premature deafness.
You have been warned.

VOLUME CONTR/L
Are viewers aware there is a TV hearing
aid that allow hard of hearing viewers
to listen at the same time as hearing
viewers without the hearing ones
getting an "ear bashing" through the
volume being turned up too high?
It consists of a set of headphones with
built in volume control that can be
connected to the TV.
They solve the problem of having to
have the TV on so loud for the hard of
hearing or persons in the family that
the others are driven up the wall.
It is said that even very deaf viewers
can benefit from them.

DIY SUBTITLES
Southampton University's Electronics
Department have devised a new system
that will allow deaf children to
benefit from most educational
programmes.
The system which will cost less than
£500 allows teachers to provide their
own subtitles for television and video
programmes.
This will be a great help with language
development to deaf children.
Its cost has been kept low by adapting
the equipment to link up with the sort
of computers commonly found in schools
such as BBC Micro. The subtitles can be
moved round the screen and the reading
speed is adjustable.

PROGRAMME
NEWS
Guy Rowston, Subtitle Editor writes:
Recently we have had letters from
viewers complaining that programmes
have been shown as being subtitled in
newspapers and programme journals when
in fact they did not carry suatitles.
We do inform the Press of programme
changes but errors do still appear in
print. The most up-to-date listing of
subtitled programmes is on 219.
After this week The "A" Team will not
be subtitled for three weeks as various
ITV companies are showing different
episodes at the same time.
The programme will return at Easter.
