CAR MILEAGE FRAUD
Thj practice@of "clocking" - turning
back car odometers to record lower
mileage - is cheating used car buyers
out of millions of pounds every year.
Surveys conducted by local authorities
over the past decade have shown that
around one in five cars monitored has
had the mileage altered.
Since 1:8p, between 26 and 44 per cent
of all convictions each year under the
Ttade Descriptions Act havj been for
mileage frauds.

CAR MILEAGE FRAUD
Traders who "clock" car mileage make an
estimated £100 million each year in
illegal gains.
A four-year-old saloon car with 65,000
miles on the clock could fetch around
£2,500 if sold by a trader and about
£3,100 at a retail@outlet.
If the odometer were to be wound back
to 25,000 miles, however, the retail
price could jump to over £4,000, making
an illegal profit of £900.

CAR MILEAGE FRAUD
Proposals aimed at ending car mileage
fraud have been sent to Roads and
Trafeic@Zinister Mr Peter Bottomley.
Director general of the Office of Fair
Trading Sir Gordon Borrie said he hoped
ministers would realise action to deter
"clocking"@was long overdue.
At present, there is little a used car
buyer can do to ensure the mileage is
accurate. If there is anz doubt that it
is, the local Ttading Standards Officer
should re informed.
